Special thanks to all of our sponsors, vendors and volunteers. We couldn't make the day a success without you!

Book Drive at Family Day

Posted By Communications Manager, Tuesday, July 19, 2016
Updated: Thursday, July 14, 2016

PAMP is proud to partner with 10 Books a Home (10BH) for a BOOK DRIVE at Family Day this year. 10BH is an early education Child-Parent Home Tutoring Program located in East Palo Alto.

Please bring your donations of gently used or new books appropriate for preschool-aged children (3-5 years) to the Family Day event to support this great organization!

10 Books A Home gives 2 books per month directly to each child in the program. 10BH puts all book donations to work by giving AND READING them to children – the basics of school-readiness. Parents sit in on every lesson, so they too learn new ways to read with their children.

Learn more about 10BH:

Who is 10 Books A Home (10BH)

10 Books A Home (10BH), founded in 2009 in East Palo Alto, CA, is an early learning child-parent home tutoring nonprofit whose mission is to support high poverty families in nurturing their preschooler’s intrinsic learning motivations so they enter kindergarten positioned to be and remain above grade level.

What 10BH Does

10BH provides a year-round, 2-year child-parent home tutoring program (Child-Parent Home Tutoring Program). The program offers home tutoring and educational resources to high poverty families in exchange for parent participation. Preschool-aged children receive weekly lessons in their homes from the age of 3 for two years until they begin kindergarten. Volunteer Role Models use 10BH’s educational resources and staff support to provide the tutoring and tailor each lesson around the child’s unique learning motivations. Parents participate in every lesson and in between lessons use educational resources and staff support to complete weekly reading and homework with their children.

Program goals
The program’s goals are twofold: (1) encourage the child to fall in love with learning by nurturing their intrinsic learning motivations, and (2) support the family in transforming their home to continually support their child’s love of learning. The impact the program seeks to achieve is long range: every child served will begin kindergarten positioned to remain at or above grade level until high school completion. 10BH longitudinally tracks academic performance from K-12 to understand its impact.

10BH's vision is to serve 1.6 million high poverty preschoolers annually by 2035, which comprises the nation's poorest 20% of preschoolers. 10BH’s dream is to tip high poverty communities into reforming themselves by empowering large numbers of children and families in local communities to annually enter kindergarten positioned to be and remain above grade level.

In 2012, two East Palo Alto family friends had the opportunity to apply to 10BH. One applied and one did not. In 2016, both women’s children were in second grade – with one major difference. The former 10BH girl performed at the top of her class while the other girl struggled academically.

In 2016, the mother who didn’t apply signed up her youngest child for 10BH. In her registration appointment, she told the story above and added, “I’m not going to make the same mistake again.”

Keep up with 10BH's progress in the following ways:

  1. News Page  - Regularly published reports, blogs, newsletters, press releases, etc.

  2. Facebook - The daily going-ons of 10BH

  3. Youtube - Regular updating of new lesson videos, how to videos, learning activity demonstrations, etc.

  4. Other - Twitter, Linkedin

Family Day is for Everyone!

Posted By Communications Manager, Tuesday, July 12, 2016
Updated: Monday, July 11, 2016

PAMP's largest event of the year is fast approaching. Come join us for Family Day on Saturday, July 30th from 10am-1pm at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto.

"We love Family Day and always have a great time. My kids especially love the pony rides and petting zoo," said Sarah. "They also like to help mommy at the PAMP board table sometimes."

This year we're excited to offer an expanded selection for lunch, including hamburgers, turkey burgers and veggie burgers in addition to the staple sausages, hot dogs and a variety of yummy salads.

We've also expanded our entertainment this year as well. We'll have a magic show, story time with a fairy princess and live music from PAMP favorite The Hipwaders.
There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, bubbles and more!

"Family Day is a great way to meet members you don't know, have a fun filled day with the family and also meet the faces behind the scenes of PAMP," said Sarah. What more could you ask for?!

We're always looking for volunteers, too. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and get to know PAMP families. Not sure what you can do while wearing your little one or chasing your toddler around? Just ask us!

Bring a friend and join the festivities. It's definitely a day not to miss!

Welcome New PAMP Board!

Posted By Communications Manager, Tuesday, June 28, 2016
Updated: Friday, June 24, 2016

PAMP has a new Board of Directors! We’d like to welcome the new crew and say thank you to the outgoing crew. The PAMP Board of Directors finds the sweet spot between "parent" and "professional" -- putting their talents to work behind the scenes for the organization while building a strong home life for their families.

The Board of Directors looks for meaningful ways to fulfill the PAMP mission, which is: Enriching the lives of families with young children, by providing resources, support and community in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and the surrounding areas.

In 2015, PAMP’s Board spent significant time evaluating program offerings and resources to ensure they were consistent with the mission statement. The Board identified certain key goals, including improving PAMP’s online platform and online presence. Our biggest effort and goal in 2015 was preparing for the new online platform. Now that it is launched, we continue to look forward to engaging with you, our members, and further driving both online and in-person connections.

The Board also looked into optimizing event offerings and enhancing new and existing member connections. With this in mind, PAMP is continuing to build on the success of our Farm Day events with more unique events such as bounce house events, Mother’s Day Tea and Member Connection events where PAMP members can get together for food and fun and entertainment for the kids. Two of those recent events were the Jump into Summer (with bounce houses galore!) and the Movie & Pizza Night. And of course, PAMP will continue to host our flagstone events like Family Day and the Preschool Fair.

"Our whole family loves PAMP. Through the years we have been members we have gotten to do some really fun activities and events,” says Co-President of the Board Sarah Sobel. “Family Day is one of our favorites because the kids love having a great picnic lunch with their friends while listening to the concert."

Keep in mind that PAMP relies on volunteers to do everything from article/review contributions to in-a-pinch meals to hosting events. Every Board of Directors position is volunteer -- but you don’t have to be on the board to help out! Many of our volunteers work from home with varied tasks -- from helping with design work to analyzing data to support with optimizing offerings.

“PAMP helps you create a village, which is what we all need when trying to navigate the ups and downs of parenting,” says PAMP member Jacquie.

We know that being a parent can be an all-consuming activity, and we appreciate all that our volunteers do for us. We believe that our members get much more out of their membership through volunteering, both from the satisfaction of having helped and from the connections and friendships formed through volunteering.

Once again, welcome to the new Board:

Sarah Sobel, Co-President

Maya Herstein, Co-President

Marissa Song, Secretary

Lisa Raghav, Treasurer

Alix Pora, Board Director - Engagement

Shirley Shtiegman, Board Director – Legal

Heather Gaillard, Board Director - Marketing & Communications

Alice Chao, Board Director, Membership

Jaimi Haydel, Board Director, Events

Jennifer Wang, Board Director, Member at Large

We hope that all of our members, new and old, take advantage of all PAMP has to offer.

PAMP turns 25!

Posted By Communications Manager, Tuesday, May 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, May 30, 2016

You know and love today’s PAMP as a vibrant community of families across the peninsula connected by an active online community and amazing in-person classes and events. This volunteer-led, non-profit organization also has a small but essential team of part-time staff to keep operations running smoothly.

But it didn’t always look this way.

Twenty-five years ago, in 1991, several moms from the Menlo Park and Palo Alto area came together to form a mother’s club. Back in those days, connecting with other parents was a very different experience -- no smartphones, text messaging or social media. Moms formed clubs to meet other moms and organize playdates for their young children.

And so PAMP was born. Founders Trish BoBorff, Kathryn Hall, Nancy Hosay, Kathy Mlinarich and Mary Pless, along with 38 members, officially formed a community dedicated to supporting each other along the journey of parenting. In 1991, the club was known as the Mother’s Club of Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

To get the word out, members would post flyers around town to alert others of upcoming playdates and parties.

In 2002, the club wanted to be sure the name reflected inclusivity of the whole family -- not just moms. The Mother’s Club of Palo Alto and Menlo Park was renamed The Parent’s Club of Palo Alto and Menlo Park (PAMP).

As the area grew, so did the club. By 2003, PAMP grew to over 1,800 member families. To support the growing organization, a Board of Directors was established to oversee club operations, and PAMP officially became a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) status.

With the changing times came changing technology. The club started using Yahoo! Groups as an organizing tool. The club continued to grow, and by 2008 it was so large that staff positions were added to support operational efficiency.

As the club continued to evolve, new elements such as large organized events and small weekly classes were added to the club offerings. To accommodate these changes and to embrace the newest technology, in 2009 PAMP transitioned off of Yahoo! and onto Big Tent. This change allowed PAMP to expand the offering of club gatherings.

Today, PAMP offers a wide range of events and classes throughout the year.

The success of PAMP’s newly launched in-home playdates has nicely complemented the existing drop-in Blanket Babies, Crawlers and Toddler Time events. Other new family activities include Farm Day (featuring train rides, pony rides and more), Jump events (with bounce houses for every age kid) and Family Move & Pizza night. PAMP has also recently transitioned off of Big Tent to a new online platform that enables members to get all the latest PAMP information from the public website and the membership site in one place.

The club has done a lot in 25 years. Here’s to looking forward to the next chapter in PAMP history!

Mother's Day Tea -- a Success!

Posted By Communications Manager, Tuesday, May 3, 2016
Updated: Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Thanks to everyone for coming out to PAMP's very first Mother's Day Tea event!

We had a large crew of PAMP members, including moms, dads, grandparents and kids from babes to tweens. It was such a sweet way to bring generations together and to bring new friends together -- all in celebration of mom.

There was an arts and crafts table where the kids made cards and decorations. There was even a fairy who performed a magic show for the kids!

We hope you have a lovely Mother's Day this weekend, and we look forward to another Mother's Day Tea next year.
